The short answer
Choose Journo when a recording should become a readable personal journal entry. Choose Just Press Record when the priority is immediate, controllable audio capture across Apple devices with transcription, editing and direct file ownership.
Just Press Record is the stronger recorder. Journo is the stronger journal.

The recording utility advantage is real
Just Press Record is designed to reduce capture time from anywhere in Apple’s ecosystem. Hardware and system surfaces can begin a recording without navigating into a journal. It supports long background recording, external microphones, Watch capture and audio editing.
Journo has recording recovery and system surfaces, but the session still belongs to a journal flow. If missing the first ten seconds is the main risk, Just Press Record’s utility design is compelling.
What happens after capture?
Just Press Record gives the user the audio file, a synchronised transcript and tools to correct, trim, search and share it. It does not generate a summary, interpretation or journal narrative.
Journo creates an entry with a title, readable formatting, date, tags and continuation. It keeps an as-spoken transcript so the user can inspect the transformation. The result is easier to browse as an inner-life archive, but less like a portable audio-file library.
Privacy and control
Open Planet Software says recordings and transcripts do not reach its servers. Users choose local storage or iCloud Drive, and the App Store developer disclosure says data is not collected. Apple’s speech service may process transcription differently depending on device and language, which is governed by Apple rather than Open Planet.
Journo uses remote transcription and formatting. It saves the file locally before upload, deletes processing audio after completion, and retains text under a pseudonymous identifier for recovery.
Just Press Record is the stronger fit when developer-side collection and direct file control are the deciding privacy requirements.
One-time purchase versus subscription
Just Press Record’s US App Store price reviewed for this page is $6.99 once. The developer’s support page says there is no subscription or in-app purchase for the current version, while reserving the possibility of charging for a future major release.
Journo can be used free for recording and playback, but complete processed text beyond the free allowance is a subscription feature. A user who needs only recording and transcription utility may prefer the one-time model. A user who needs a maintained processing and journal service may accept recurring pricing.
Where Just Press Record wins
- fastest capture from Apple system surfaces;
- Mac and independent Watch recording;
- unlimited-duration audio utility behavior;
- local or iCloud Drive file control;
- waveform trimming and audio formats;
- one-time purchase and no generative AI.
Where Journo wins
- entries organised as a personal journal;
- readable cleanup beside the source transcript;
- tags, continuation and journal-specific browsing;
- no upfront payment to record and replay;
- a product language built for emotion rather than generic recording.
Choose based on the archive you want
Just Press Record produces a library of recordings. Journo produces a journal whose entries happen to begin with recordings.
This distinction matters after six months. Do you want to manage filenames and audio files, or open a dated stream of thoughts that are already easy to read?
A fair test
Capture 30 seconds from the locked phone, then record a five-minute reflection in airplane mode. Test interruption, Watch use, transcript latency, correction, file export, sync and deletion.
Finally, return after one week. If speed and source-file control are the value, choose Just Press Record. If the recording only becomes useful once it sits inside a journal, choose Journo.
